Can it make money?
Sometimes. Almost never in the order people expect.
Nearly everyone who earns from this made something for themselves first, then noticed other people wanted it. The other way round usually fails, and here is why.
Building is now the easy part. The hard part has not moved: finding somebody who wants the thing. Build something nobody asked for and you have spent an evening and learned a lot. Just do not expect the evening to pay you.
Six that work, and how each one fails
A page for a business that has none
Plumbers, salons, trades, one person operations. Plenty still have nothing, or something from 2014 that breaks on a phone. An evening's work now, which changes what you can charge and how many you can do.
Fails when: you build first and look for a buyer after. Sell it, take a deposit, then build.
A calculator for one trade
How much decking, how many rolls, what the shipping costs. Tiny, boring, and a whole industry will use it daily if it is the only one that gets the sums right.
Fails when: the maths is nearly right. Being wrong once ends it. Test it against jobs you know the answer to.
A quote tool you sell to a business
The thing a company does in a spreadsheet, three people deep, with mistakes. Nobody who feels that daily thinks it is boring.
Fails when: you sell it to five industries at once. One industry, one workflow, one price.
A lead page in a niche you know
A page that gets found, collects an enquiry, and sends it to a business that wants enquiries. You are paid per enquiry, not for the page.
Fails when: nobody finds it. This one lives or dies on being found, which takes months.
A directory for a world you are already in
Every hobby, trade and local scene has a list that currently lives in a pinned message or somebody's spreadsheet. Directories earn from listings and sponsors, not from users.
Fails when: you are not part of that world. You will not know what to list or who to ask.
A small paid tool for people like you
The thing you built for yourself, tidied up, sold to people with your exact problem. The most common honest path to a first payment, because the research already happened. You were the customer.
Fails when: you were the only one with that problem. Ask three people before you polish anything.
What we will not tell you
That any of this is fast, passive, or a business. Most things built in an evening earn nothing, including most of ours. The ones that earn, earn a little from a few people with a specific problem, which is a good outcome for one evening.
There is no number on this page for what you will make. Anybody who gives you one is guessing or selling.
The sensible order
- Build something for yourself. You learn the whole loop where failure costs nothing.
- Notice who asks about it. People asking whether they can have one is the only research that means anything.
- Sell the second one before you build it. A deposit is the only proof the interest was real.
